The brand was built on game-changing genetics and elite flower. With Gelato back out front, can Sherbinskis reach that standard again?

Sherbinskis is making Gelato the centre of its next era.
The current brand presentation now opens with “Gelato. The next era.”, with Bacio Gelato #41, Mochi, Acai Berry and Gello being brought back together as the core Sherbinskis family. That is a significant direction for a name whose influence on modern cannabis was originally built around those genetics rather than simply attached to them later.
Gelato has become so common across modern cannabis that it is easy to forget how disruptive the original family actually was.
Nugg Notes' recent reconstruction of the Gelato story traces the project to 2014, when Mario Guzman reversed Sunset Sherbert onto Thin Mint GSC. Roughly 54 phenotypes were later smoked and compared in a group tasting, producing a handful of selections that became foundational names: Bacio #41, Gello #43, Mochi #47, Açaí #49 and others.
Those genetics did considerably more than give Sherbinskis a successful menu.

They helped establish a blueprint for the dessert and candy gas era that followed. Gelato moved through breeding programs around California and eventually globally, appearing directly or indirectly behind cultivars including Biscotti, Jealousy, Gelonade and numerous other lines. Even cultivars that moved cannabis away from straight Gelato still developed inside a market whose expectations had been heavily shaped by it.
That history is why Sherbinskis leaning back into Gelato feels more important than a normal heritage relaunch.
The name was originally built around cannabis that changed what people wanted.
And that creates a much higher standard for the current brand.
Over the years, Sherbinskis maintained enormous name recognition even as its flower reputation became less dominant than it had been during the original era. By the time PrimeTime became involved, even the company's own account acknowledged that there were serious product and quality issues to rebuild. PrimeTime co-founder Oleg Spektorov has publicly described the condition of the brand they inherited as requiring broad changes across flower, products and genetics.
That distinction matters because Sherbinskis has never struggled to look like an important cannabis brand.
The harder question has been whether the product could consistently make the name feel as important as the branding.
Right now, the presentation is beginning to feel considerably more focused again.
Gelato is being treated as the foundation rather than simply another strain on the menu. The wider cultural identity is also becoming clearer, with skateboarding increasingly visible around the brand. A July DGK x Sherbinskis street-tour activation in Los Angeles was hosted by Stevie Williams and Boo Johnson, putting Sherbinskis directly back inside a culture that has always sat naturally alongside California cannabis.
He is already one of DGK's most recognisable skaters and has built an identity that crosses skateboarding, fashion and street culture. Recent Sherbinskis media makes him feel like a natural potential face for this period of the brand, although no formal ambassador role needs to be assumed unless the company announces one.
Sherbinskis was never compelling because cannabis existed in a vacuum around it. The strongest years of the brand sat naturally beside music, fashion, art and California street culture. Reconnecting with skateboarding feels much closer to that original DNA than simply recruiting another celebrity and placing a logo beside them.
But the culture can only carry the cannabis so far.
And that is where Ryan Bartholomew becomes relevant.
Ryan leading genetics at Sherbinskis is not new news. The culture has already had that conversation, including the complicated public response surrounding Mario and the current ownership. The more interesting question now is what Ryan actually produces with the opportunity.
His record makes the experiment worth taking seriously.
Doja's early breakout was built in part around Ryan's ability to source and identify cuts rather than simply create packaging around somebody else's hype. RS11 came from a 100-seed population involving work from DEO Farms and Wizard Trees, with Ryan and the group selecting the keeper that eventually became one of the defining cultivars of that period.
Permanent Marker is another example.
Seed Junky created the genetics, but Ryan identified the selection, helped name and launch it through Doja, and built a release around getting extremely fresh flower directly into the hands of smokers. Permanent Marker subsequently became one of the defining cultivars of the early 2020s and was named Leafly's 2023 Strain of the Year.

That is the part of Ryan's history that matters here.
Sherbinskis does not need somebody to tell consumers that Gelato is legendary.
It needs somebody willing to hunt, select, discard, retest and protect the finished product until something genuinely worth carrying the Sherbinskis name emerges.
Ryan has repeatedly shown an appetite for that process.
His comments around Doja have also focused heavily on the small details between harvest and the finished package: minimal handling, trichome preservation and maintaining a clear standard for what a particular cut is supposed to look and smoke like.
Those are important qualities for a brand whose reputation was originally created by the cannabis itself.
There are still some enormous shoes attached to the job.
Mario's contribution to Sherbinskis cannot realistically be separated from this story. Whatever the corporate structure today, the Gelato family being promoted as “the next era” exists because of breeding and selection work tied directly to the original era.
It is genuinely unfortunate that the person so closely connected to creating that foundation is not involved in this chapter.
Mario continues his genetics work separately through Voice of the Plant, while Sherbinskis moves ahead under different ownership. Public disagreements around the separation have made that distinction even clearer during 2026.
But respecting Mario's contribution does not require Ryan to imitate him.
If anything, asking Ryan to reproduce the past would waste what makes his involvement interesting.
Mario's generation established something foundational.
Ryan has demonstrated that he understands modern selection, modern smokers and the current exotic market.
The strongest possible outcome is not a recreation of 2014. It is Sherbinskis using its genetic foundation to find something that feels just as relevant in 2026.
That is also why the current branding revival cuts both ways.
Sherbinskis is beginning to look culturally sharp again. The Gelato family has been organised into a clear story. Skateboarding is becoming visible around the brand. Boo Johnson fits naturally into that world. The orange identity remains instantly recognisable.
Those are all positives.
But modern cannabis has no shortage of brands that look exceptional.
The danger would be allowing Sherbinskis to become another canvas where strong creative direction, cultural credibility and famous genetics are doing more work than the flower itself.
For this particular name, that would be a strange reversal of how everything started.
Sherbinskis became a strong brand because the genetics and cannabis underneath it were already strong.
The product created the mythology.
The mythology created the brand.
The opportunity now is to rebuild in that same order.
The ingredients are increasingly visible: one of the most influential genetic families in modern cannabis, a genetics programme led by someone with a proven ability to identify culturally important flower, and a creative direction that is reconnecting Sherbinskis with the street and skate world around it.
Now comes the part that cannot be designed.
The flower has to deliver.
If Sherbinskis can put genuinely high-performance batches behind “Gelato. The next era.”, the company has an opportunity to do much more than monetise one of cannabis' strongest legacies.
It can add another chapter to it.
And that is the real standard here.
Gelato already proved what Sherbinskis once was capable of.
The next era has to show us what Sherbinskis is capable of now.
